Barcode Printing In Batches, with dates, omitting weekends

Setting - Hospital Lab

Objective - Print labels in sets of 8 (8 copies), the date is included in the bar code. Need to print a months worth of labels, use off-the-shelf label stock, can not confuse the sets of 8 and does not want labels printed for the weekend days.

Evaluation - The date would also be in the human readable interpretation of the bar code. The off-the-shelf labels were 2 across and had a gap between every label. They had an existing Zebra thermal transfer printer. There were a few users and they were not proficient computer users.

The System - As simple as possible. Software only. Existing printer, computer and label supplies. The user was presented with a field for the date and a field for the sequence start point. Upon enter the date field, the user was presented with a simple calendar. Upon selecting the proper month, the sequence would default to the last number printed +1. If the user chooses, he could over-ride the system and enter a different start point. The system automatically printed the labels in sets of 8, with a line printed to separate the sets and did not print any dates which fell on a Saturday or Sunday.

This system was developed very quickly and shipped to the customer in under 10 days.
